Condylox Gel Use
Condylox (Podofilox) is an FDA approved topical gel that treats genital warts. Condylox is used to remove certain types of warts on the outside skin of the genital areas (penis or vulva). The gel is used also to treat warts between the genitals and the rectum, the solution is not. Neither the gel nor the solution is used to treat warts that occur inside the rectum, vagina, or urine passageways inside the penis (male) or the vulva (female). Condylox works by destroying the skin of the wart.
Condylox Gel Description
Podofilox is an antimitotic drug which can be chemically synthesized or purified from the plant families Coniferae and Berberidaceae (e.g. species of Juniperus and Podophyllum ). Condylox® Gel 0.5% is formulated for topical administration. Each gram of gel contains 5mg of podofilox in a buffered alcoholic gel containing alcohol, glycerin, lactic acid, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium lactate, and butylated hydroxytoluene.
How Condylox Gel works
Condylox destroys infected cells by stopping the cell growth process.
How to apply Condylox Gel
Apply twice daily for 3 consecutive days, then discontinue for 4 consecutive days. This 1 week cycle of treatment may be repeated until there is no visible wart tissue or for a maximum of four cycles. If there is incomplete response after 4 treatment cycles, discontinue treatment and consider alternative treatment. Safety and effectiveness of more than 4 treatment cycles has not been established. There is no evidence to suggest that more frequent application will increase efficacy, but additional applications would be expected to increase the rate of local adverse reactions and systemic absorption.
Condylox Gel 0.5% should be applied to the warts with the applicator tip or finger. Application on the surrounding normal tissue should be minimized. Treatment should be limited to 10 cm2 or less of wart tissue and to no more than 0.5g of the gel per day.
Care should be taken to allow the Condylox gel to dry before allowing the return of opposing skin surfaces to their normal positions. Patients should be instructed to wash their hands thoroughly before and after each application.
Condylox Gel precautions
Condylox is not a cure for genital warts. The virus remains in the body in an inactive state even when the warts are gone. A person treated for genital warts may still be able to infect others. Therefore, use caution when engaging in sexual activity. Also, Condylox has a tendency to weaken condoms and diaphragms. You should wash off any excess medicine before sex to prevent the spread of the virus to others.
Condylox Gel indications
DO NOT use Condylox if you: - Are pregnant or nursing.
- Are allergic to Condylox.
- Have genital warts in mucous membranes (urethra, vagina, and anus)
What to tell your doctor
